    Preview abstract Field studies are irreplaceable but costly, time-consuming, and error-prone, which need careful preparation. Inspired by rapid-prototyping in manufacturing, we propose a fast, low-cost evaluation method using Vision-Language Model (VLM) personas to simulate outcomes comparable to field results. While LLMs show human-like reasoning and language capabilities, autonomous vehicle (AV)-pedestrian interaction requires spatial awareness, emotional empathy, and behavioral generation. This raises our research question: To what extent can VLM personas mimic human responses in field studies? We conducted parallel studies: 1) one real-world study with 20 participants, and 2) one video-study using 20 VLM personas, both on a street-crossing task. We compared their responses and interviewed five HCI researchers on potential applications. Results show that VLM personas mimic human response patterns (e.g., average crossing times of 5.25 s vs. 5.07 s) lack the behavioral variability and depth. They show promise for formative studies, field study preparation, and human data augmentation. View details
    Preview abstract We introduce AASE (Activation-based AI Safety Enforcement), a framework for post-perception safety monitoring in large language models. Unlike pre-perception approaches that analyze input or output text, AASE monitors the model's internal activation patterns—what the model "understands" rather than what text it processes or generates—enabling detection of safety-relevant states before harmful outputs are produced. The framework comprises three techniques: Activation Fingerprinting (AF) for harmful content detection, Agent Action Gating (AAG) for prompt injection defense, and Activation Policy Compliance (APC) for enterprise policy enforcement. We introduce paired contrastive training to isolate safety-relevant signals from confounding factors such as topic and style, addressing signal entanglement in polysemantic activations. Validation across 7 models from 3 architecture families shows strong class separation: Gemma-2-9B achieves AUC 1.00 with 7.2σ separation across all probes; AAG achieves AUC ≥0.88 across all models on the InjecAgent benchmark; APC achieves 0.97-1.00 AUC across three enterprise policies. Model size correlates with probe quality—Gemma-2-9B (7.2σ separation) outperforms Gemma-2-2B (4.3σ). All techniques survive INT4 quantization with minimal separation degradation. AASE is 9× faster than Llama Guard 3 (33ms vs 306ms) with higher TPR (88% vs 50%) at a tunable threshold that trades FPR for detection sensitivity, adding only 0.002ms probe overhead to existing inference.     Preview abstract Despite widespread use, charts remain largely inaccessible for Low-Vision Individuals (LVI). Reading charts requires viewing data points within a global context, which is difficult for LVI who may rely on magnification or experience a partial field of vision. We aim to improve exploration by providing visual access to critical context. To inform this, we conducted a formative study with five LVI. We identified four fundamental contextual elements common across chart types: axes, legend, grid lines, and the overview. We propose two pointer-based interaction methods to provide this context: Dynamic Context, a novel focus+context interaction, and Mini-map, which adapts overview+detail principles for LVI. In a study with N=22 LVI, we compared both methods and evaluated their integration to current tools. Our results show that Dynamic Context had significant positive impact on access, usability, and effort reduction; however, worsened visual load. Mini-map strengthened spatial understanding, but was less preferred for this task. We offer design insights to guide the development of future systems that support LVI with visual context while balancing visual load. View details

    Preview abstract The current pursuit of robust machine intelligence is largely predicated on a substrate independent, computational functionalist view of cognition, where sufficiently complex computational processing is expected to eventually yield generalized reasoning. This paper explores the ontological distinctions between these computational frameworks and biological cognition, specifically how these differences impact the capacity for semantic understanding. By analyzing phenomena such as the "reversal curse" where models fail to generalize the symmetry in identity relations (A=B implies B=A), and performance on novel reasoning benchmarks (e.g., ARC-AGI), this paper examines whether current model limitations are transient artifacts of scale or indicative of a distinct architectural category. Integrating Stevan Harnad’s “symbol grounding problem” with Evan Thompson’s biological model of “intrinsic normativity,” I investigate whether robust general intelligence might require sense-making: a process distinct from information processing, whereby an agent’s internal states are causally coupled with its environment via survival or system-wide stakes which grounds symbols in meaning. Current Large Language Models (LLMs) appear to lack this intrinsic normativity, and consequently may operate primarily as epistemic instruments rather than ontic agents. By introducing the concept of “ontic grounding”, this paper presents a potential framework for distinguishing between the simulation of reasoning and true understanding, which could have implications for AI safety and governance.     Preview abstract We study the d-dimensional knapsack problem. We are given a set of items, each with a d-dimensional cost vector and a profit, along with a d-dimensional budget vector. The goal is to select a set of items that do not exceed the budget in all dimensions and maximize the total profit. A polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) with running time n^{Θ(d/{ε})} has long been known for this problem, where {ε} is the error parameter and n is the encoding size. Despite decades of active research, the best running time of a PTAS has remained O(n^{⌈ d/{ε} ⌉ - d}). Unfortunately, existing lower bounds only cover the special case with two dimensions d = 2, and do not answer whether there is a n^{o(d/({ε)})}-time PTAS for larger values of d. In this work, we show that the running times of the best-known PTAS cannot be improved up to a polylogarithmic factor assuming the Exponential Time Hypothesis (ETH). Our techniques are based on a robust reduction from 2-CSP, which embeds 2-CSP constraints into a desired number of dimensions. Then, using a recent result of [Bafna Karthik and Minzer, STOC'25], we succeed in exhibiting tight trade-off between d and {ε} for all regimes of the parameters assuming d is sufficiently large. Informally, our result also shows that under ETH, for any function f there is no f(d/({ε)}) ⋅ n^{õ(d/({ε)})}-time (1-{ε})-approximation for d-dimensional knapsack, where n is the number of items and õ hides polylogarithmic factors in d/({ε)}.     Preview abstract There are growing concerns about AI-generated image-based sexual abuse (AI-IBSA), also known as nonconsensual sexualized ′deepfakes.′ Empirical research on AI-IBSA, however, remains very limited. This study surveyed 7231 respondents across Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States to investigate community attitudes and perceptions on AI-IBSA. Through a vignette study, we explored the relationship between public familiarity with AI-IBSA, normative concerns about consent, and context-dependent judgments that vary based on the target's identity relational status, and how the content was used. Our findings reveal strong condemnation of AI-IBSA, yet respondents demonstrated low familiarity with the technology and their views varied depending on particular contexts. AI-IBSA targeting intimate partners was viewed as more unacceptable than targeting celebrities, and content created solely for personal use was seen as less unacceptable than content intended for distribution. The study highlights the need for approaches that go beyond technical fixes and punitive measures, advocating for a multifaceted response that integrates ethical data governance, digital sexual literacy, and restorative justice approaches.     SpatialStack: Layered Geometry-Language Fusion for 3D VLM Spatial Reasoning

    Preview abstract Large vision-language models (VLMs) still struggle with reliable 3D spatial reasoning, a core capability for embodied and physical AI systems. This limitation arises from their inability to capture fine-grained 3D geometry and spatial relationships. While recent efforts have introduced multi-view geometry transformers into VLMs, they typically fuse only the deep-layer features from vision and geometry encoders, discarding rich hierarchical signals and creating a fundamental bottleneck for spatial understanding. To overcome this, we propose SpatialStack, a general hierarchical fusion framework that progressively aligns vision, geometry, and language representations across the model hierarchy. Moving beyond conventional late-stage vision-geometry fusion, SpatialStack stacks and synchronizes multi-level geometric features with the language backbone, enabling the model to capture both local geometric precision and global contextual semantics. Building upon this framework, we develop VLM-SpatialStack, a model that achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple 3D spatial reasoning benchmarks. Extensive experiments and ablations demonstrate that our multi-level fusion strategy consistently enhances 3D understanding and generalizes robustly across diverse spatial reasoning tasks, establishing SpatialStack as an effective and extensible design paradigm for vision-language-geometry integration in next-generation multimodal physical AI systems.     Preview abstract We present CrossCheck, a system that validates inputs to the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controller in a Wide Area Network (WAN). By detecting incorrect inputs—often stemming from bugs in the SDN control infrastructure—CrossCheck alerts operators before they trigger network outages. Our analysis at a large-scale WAN operator identifies invalid inputs as a leading cause of major outages, and we show how CrossCheck would have prevented those incidents. We deployed CrossCheck as a shadow validation system for four weeks in a production WAN, during which it accurately detected the single incident of invalid inputs that occurred while sustaining a 0% false positive rate under normal operation, hence imposing little additional burden on operators. In addition, we show through simulation that CrossCheck reliably detects a wide range of invalid inputs (e.g., detecting demand perturbations as small as 5% with 100% accuracy) and maintains a near-zero false positive rate for realistic levels of noisy, missing, or buggy telemetry data (e.g., sustaining zero false positives with up to 30% of corrupted telemetry data).     Exponential quantum advantage in processing massive classical data

    Preview abstract Broadly applicable quantum advantage, particularly in classical data processing and machine learning, has been a fundamental open problem. In this work, we prove that a small quantum computer of polylogarithmic size can perform large-scale classification and dimension reduction on massive classical data by processing samples on the fly, whereas any classical machine achieving the same prediction performance requires exponentially larger size. Furthermore, classical machines that are exponentially larger yet below the required size need superpolynomially more samples and time. We validate these quantum advantages in real-world applications, including single-cell RNA sequencing and movie review sentiment analysis, demonstrating four to six orders of magnitude reduction in size with fewer than 60 logical qubits. These quantum advantages are enabled by quantum oracle sketching, an algorithm for accessing the classical world in quantum superposition using only random classical data samples. Combined with classical shadows, our algorithm circumvents the data loading and readout bottleneck to construct succinct classical models from massive classical data, a task provably impossible for any classical machine that is not exponentially larger than the quantum machine. These quantum advantages persist even when classical machines are granted unlimited time or if BPP=BQP, and rely only on the correctness of quantum mechanics. Together, our results establish machine learning on classical data as a broad and natural domain of quantum advantage and a fundamental test of quantum mechanics at the complexity frontier.     From Correctness to Collaboration: A Human-Centered Taxonomy of AI Agent Behavior in Software Engineering

    Preview abstract The ongoing transition of Large Language Models in software engineering from code generators into autonomous agents requires a shift in how we define and measure success. While models are becoming more capable, the industry lacks a clear understanding of the behavioral norms that make an agent effective in collaborative software development in the enterprise. This work addresses this gap by presenting a taxonomy of desirable agent behaviors, synthesized from 91 sets of user-defined rules for coding agents. We identify four core expectations: Adhere to Standards and Processes, Ensure Code Quality and Reliability, Solve Problems Effectively, and Collaborate with the User. These findings offer a concrete vocabulary for agent behavior, enabling researchers to move beyond correctness-only benchmarks and design evaluations that reflect the realities of professional software development in large enterprises.     Preview abstract Enterprises are increasingly adopting multiple general-purpose computer architectures in the data center. This leads to new testing challenges as it creates demand to qualify the software for the additional architectures. Naively double-testing all software for both architectures is costly and unnecessary. Further, reconfiguring CI/CD to take advantage of the new architecture can be non-trivial at scale. This paper introduces CI/CD variants and an optimized testing cycle to solve these twin challenges. We empirically evaluate our solution's impact on human and machine expenses using 44k projects at Google on real production data. First, we estimate saving ~25% of machine expenses at the negligible cost of a few delayed breakage detections per day. Second, we estimate a 90+% reduction in human cost for migrating the configuration. All features described in this paper are now Generally Available at Google and we report this as an empirical case study in scaling CI/CD to new architectures. View details
    GUIDE: A Benchmark for User Context Understanding and Assistance in GUI Workflow Videos

    Preview abstract Graphical User Interface (GUI) agents have the potential to assist users in interacting with complex software. While prior research has primarily focused on automating user actions through clicks and keystrokes, this paradigm overlooks human intention, where users value the ability to explore, iterate, and refine their ideas while maintaining agency.To move beyond automation and toward collaboration, GUI agents must understand what users are doing and why. We introduce GUIDE (GUI Understanding, Intent, and Help Decision Evaluation), a benchmark that evaluates AI models on their ability to perceive user behavior, infer intent, and provide assistance in open-ended GUI tasks. GUIDE consists of 67.5 hours of screen recordings from 120 novice user demonstrations with think-aloud narrations that surface user intent, across 10 complex software (e.g., PowerPoint, Photoshop). GUIDE defines three tasks—(i) Behavior State Detection, (ii) Intent Prediction, and (iii) Help Prediction that test a model’s ability to recognize behavior state, reason about goals, and decide when and how to help. Evaluations across eight state-of-the-art multimodal models reveal that all models struggled with the tasks, achieving only 44.6% and 55.0% accuracy on behavior state and help prediction. However, providing user context such as behavioral state and intent significantly improved the performance, raising help prediction by up to 50.2%. These results highlight the critical role of structured user understanding in effective assistance.Our benchmark provides a path toward GUI agents that go beyond automation to become truly user-aware collaborators.     Preview abstract Individuals regularly experience Hearing Difficulty Moments in everyday conversation. Identifying Hearing Difficulty Moments has particular significance in the field of hearing assistive technology where timely interventions are key for real-time hearing assistance. In this article, we propose and compare machine learning solutions for the temporal detection of segments containing Hearing Difficulty Moments in conversational audio. We show that audio language models, through their multimodal reasoning capabilities, can achieve state-of-the-art results for this task, significantly outperforming a simple automatic speech recognition (ASR) hotword heuristic and a more conventional fine-tuning approach with Wav2Vec, an audio-only input architecture that is state-of-the-art for ASR.     Preview abstract Existing image simplification techniques often rely on Non-Photorealistic Rendering (NPR), transforming photographs into stylized sketches, cartoons, or paintings. While effective at reducing visual complexity, such approaches typically sacrifice photographic realism. In this work, we explore a complementary direction: simplifying images while preserving their photorealistic appearance. We introduce progressive semantic image simplification, a framework that iteratively reduces scene complexity by removing and inpainting elements in a controlled manner. At each step, the resulting image remains a plausible natural photograph. Our method combines semantic understanding with generative editing, leveraging Vision-Language Models (VLMs) to identify and prioritize elements for removal, and a learned verifier to ensure photorealism and coherence throughout the process. This is implemented via an iterative \emph{Select–Remove–Verify} pipeline that produces high-quality simplification trajectories. To improve efficiency, we further distill this process into an image-to-video generation model that directly predicts coherent simplification sequences from a single input image. Beyond generating cleaner and more focused compositions, our approach enables applications such as content-aware decluttering, semantic layer decomposition, and interactive editing. More broadly, our work suggests that simplification through structured content removal can serve as a practical mechanism for guiding visual interpretation within the photorealistic domain, complementing traditional abstraction methods.
