Overview
Google is committed to fostering equitable educational outcomes for all learners. We recognize the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to revolutionize teaching and learning, but also understand the critical importance of ensuring that AI is developed and deployed in ways that actively address historical disparities and promote inclusive practices.

Notification of proposal decisions
Research topics
Proposals should specifically cover one or more of the following topics:
- AI systems to improve student learning outcomes: Investigating practical and effective ways to bring learning-science infused AI to improve student learning outcomes in a wide range of academic disciplines and skill areas.
- Evaluating AI-based educational solutions: Exploring the design of methods to evaluate the pedagogical effectiveness of AI-supported educational experiences.
- Empowering teachers with AI: Examining how AI systems can support, empower and accelerate teacher's tasks in and outside of the classroom.
- Guidelines for complex historical narratives: Exploring how to develop AI models that can generate educational content able to address sensitive historical topics (slavery, colonialism, etc.) with diverse perspectives and cultural sensitivity.
- Accessibility tools: Investigating how AI-driven accessibility tools can be developed and implemented to create a more inclusive learning environment for students with disabilities.
- AI-facilitated collaboration and social-emotional learning development: Investigations into how to build AI-supported collaborative learning environments that effectively promote both academic achievement and social-emotional learning.
- Implementation for enhanced learning: Investigating how AI tools can be effectively implemented and scaled in educational systems to improve learning outcomes for all students.
Award details
Award amounts vary by topic up to $100K USD, and are intended to support the advancement of the professor’s research during the academic year in which the award is provided. However, we can consider larger grants for exceptional experimental proposals that demonstrate a clear and compelling rationale for the increased funding.
Funds will be disbursed as unrestricted gifts to the university and are not intended for overhead or indirect costs.
Requirements
Eligibility
- Open to professors (assistant, associate, etc.) at a university or degree-granting research institution.
- Applicants may only serve as Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI on one proposal per round. There can be a maximum of 2 PIs per proposal.
- Proposals must be related to computing or technology.

Review criteria
- Faculty merit: Faculty is accomplished in research, community engagement, and open source contributions, with potential to contribute to responsible innovation.
- Research merit: Faculty's proposed research is aligned with Google Research interests, innovative, and likely to have a significant impact on the field.
- Proposal quality: The research proposal is clear, focused, and well-organized, and it demonstrates the team's ability to successfully execute the research and achieve a significant impact.
- AI ethics principles: The research proposal strongly aligns with Google's AI Principles.
