Featured research collaborations
We have the opportunity to build collaborations with global faculty through several different programs. This page highlights current collaborations that are important to us and awards that we granted beyond our faculty engagement programs.
While we do significant in-house research and engineering, we also maintain strong ties with academic institutions worldwide pursuing innovative research in core areas relevant to our products and services. As part of that vision, our research awards aim to recognize and support world-class faculty and labs pursuing cutting-edge research in areas of mutual interest. As part of Google’s ongoing commitment to support ambitious research, we support faculty through a variety of research awards in areas that are of key interest to Google.
Artists + machine intelligence (AMI) research awards
Google’s Artists + Machine Intelligence (AMI) Research Awards provide funding to higher education faculty pursuing arts and social science research related to machine learning (ML) and its implications on society. See award recipients.
Award details
Awards are disbursed as unrestricted gifts to the researcher’s university or organization and are not intended for overhead or indirect costs. We welcome interdisciplinary proposals from across art and social science disciplines, including, but not limited, to anthropology, architecture, design, history, linguistics et cetera, with implications for the development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, especially generative ML, computer vision, and natural language processing.

Computer science education research awards
Google’s Computer Science Education Research (CS-ER) Awards provide funding for one-year proof-of-concept pilots. In addition to receiving funding, awardees join a year-long cohort experience that creates opportunities for researchers to share expertise and tools and provide mentoring to new researchers. See awards participants.
Award details
Awards are disbursed as unrestricted gifts to the researcher’s university or organization and are not intended for overhead or indirect costs. We welcome proposals that are interdisciplinary (for example, intersections of computer science, education, cognitive sciences, psychology, sociology, neuroscience, instructional design, et cetera), empirically-based, and focused on advancing the scientific understanding and practice of CS teaching and learning in scalable ways. Proposals that include partnerships across multiple institutions are especially welcome.
FAQ
What research areas do the CS-ER Awards support?
Priority research areas include, but are not limited to:
- Developmental readiness: What are effective instructional strategies for identifying whether a student is developmentally ready to learn particular CS concepts?
- Engagement: How does early CS experience impact future interest in CS?
- Equity: What interventions, supports, approaches or materials are most effective for increasing engagement and success for students from historically marginalized groups?
- Implementation: How can districts and states verify the effectiveness of their CS education implementations?
- Preservice education: What exemplary and scalable models exist for incorporating CS learning into teacher preparation programs?
- Professional development: What are the best practices for CS PD in terms of positively impacting student learning?
- Teaching CS: What models of CS content delivery provide the largest impact on students learning (after school, in school discrete courses, in school integrated into other disciplines)? How do we measure effective CS teaching?

Google India research awards
Google India Research Awards are focused on supporting exceptional computer science research in the region. Through this program we also intend to strengthen long-term collaborative relationships with faculty working on problems that will impact how future generations use technology. See award recipients.
Award details
India Research Awards intend to support faculty at universities or degree-granting research institutions in the region engaged in world-class research in all areas relevant to Google. The program also includes a sub-track to support early-career professors (faculty who have begun their faculty careers within five years of submission of application).
The funds granted will be 20,000 USD and are intended to support the advancement of the professor’s research.
Faculty can submit one application per round by including a two-page research proposal outlining their research agenda (research goals, proposed approach, expected outcomes, relation to prior work) and the faculty member’s CV. References are not included in the page limit.
