Abstract
As neuroscience marches into the experimental era of a high-throughput, single-cell and real-time regime, our understanding of the nervous system is shifting from hypothesis-driven to data-driven. Recent advances in machine learning and brain-computer interfaces have enabled us to create mechanistic theories, predict neural signals and utilize this knowledge to create task-specific feedback loops for multiple purposes. The synergy between industrial and academic research is tighter now than ever. Here, we present Project Amber, Google's mental health moonshot, as an example of a synergistic industry / academia collaboration.
