Yasutaka Furukawa


Yasutaka Furukawa is a software engineer at Google. His research focus is in automated 3D reconstruction and visualization techniques from images. He is best known by his multi-view stereo (MVS) algorithm, which has been recognized as the best 3D reconstruction algorithm from calibrated photographs based on the quantitative evaluation conducted by Computer Vision researchers. His MVS software has been used by a visual effect company, Industrial Light and Magic, for real production purposes. More recently at Google, he develops and deploys state-of-the-art computer vision and graphics techniques into real products. One of his latest work includes the development of a system that recovers dense city 3D models from aerial images automatically, which runs in an unprecedented scale for hundreds of cities all over the world, where the reconstructed 3D models are served on Google map for various graphics applications. Before joining Google, Dr. Furukawa was a research associate at the University of Washington. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008 and a Bachelor's degree from the University of Tokyo in 2001.
