Babak Alipanahi

Babak is a senior research scientist at Google Health. He works on genomics research, where he is building machine learning models for phenotyping large cohorts and disease risk modeling. Prior to Google. Health, he was at 23andMe, working on polygenic risk scores and target discovery. He obtained his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo, ON, Canada in 2011, focusing on automating protein NMR structure determination using machine learning and optimization. Babak then joined Brendan Frey's lab for his Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto, ON, Canada, where he used deep learning to model gene regulatory pathways and disease genomics. Babak was a co-recipient of the University of Toronto's Invention of the Year Award for the DeepBind method in 2016; he was also a co-founder of Deep Genomics, Inc.
